What can I say about this member? Philosopher, poet, duelist, leader and friend.
Several years ago while teaming with another future guild mate in Star Trek Online (STO), I was introduced to CatStar. It wasn’t easy to recruit Cat to the fleet, and the association has not always been smooth sailing, however things would not have been the same without him.
From the first CatStar proved to be a staple member of the -I.D.I.C- fleet, organizing events as well as participating in many guild activities. Over the time of his STO: -I.D.I.C- Fleet membership CatStar held several Officer (leadership) positions including; Fleet Commander, Tactical Command Officer and Fleet Leader. Cat was also the first member to be awarded all of our fleet commendations.
In addition CatStar was a sitting member of the Guild Alliance Committee (GAC).
The Guild Alliance: Hall of Heroes is proud to induct the one and only… CatStar.
Jim Manavis (-Plasma)
Chairman of the Guild Alliance Committee
As with all our Hall of Heroes inductees we asked CatStar to answer a few questions for us.
Q. What is your main gamer tag?
A. I was known as “CatStar” …these days my professional name is “Adventure.Cat.”
Q. How and when did you become involved with the Guild Alliance or one of its Guilds/Organizations?
A. One day the sky darkened, and there was lightning and thunder, cats everywhere ran for it…for it was my friend Alanna T’Paw with another guild to join. (dun dun duuun!) But she said this was a good one, so i gave it a go!
Q. When did you start gaming and what got you playing games?
A. When I was a kid, a friend had an Atari, I was the worst player ever…..later on in life i played Pacman at the laundry mat when I could scrounge up a quarter or two. I didn’t get my first system until i was in 3rd grade, it was an abandoned Atari 2600 our neighbor didn’t want, their kid has left for college and didn’t want it so they gave it to me, Mario voice: “here we gooooo!” I played for years.
Q. What was the first game you ever remember playing?
A. I forget what one of the cartridges I played first, the only one i remember best was berserk. I was hooked on this amazing technology that was already old news to the rest of the world.
Q. I know that people play games for a variety of reasons, why do you play video games?
A. I’m nocturnal, cats roam at night. So to keep out of trouble I remain indoors at night. Since I generally read every book I can find I tend to run out of things to do once I run out of titles, I play games…gaming didn’t take off for me as a habit until I bought a Sega Genesis, I was already an adult by then. These days, I’ve made friends online and mostly go on to see them, I gave up on consoles as games don’t interest me like they used to.
Q. Can you name me a few RPG’s that you’ve played these past few years?
A. Arcanum, Dungeons and Dragons, Star Trek Online, Champions Online, World of Warcraft, DC Universe Online, Star Wars, The Old Republic, Final Fantasy XIV, Tera Online…
Q. Among those that you’ve stated, which is your favorite and why?
A. Star Trek Online. I met some of my closest gaming friends there and had some of the best gaming memories while playing in that game… plus that’s where my original cast of cats was born :3
Q. Any suggestions on how to improve the Star Trek Online game-play?
A. Better customer service, fix broken items and gear they mess up or nerf after you pay for them. :/ You see this is why I left STO to begin with.
Q. If you were to create your own MMORPG or RPG, what elements would you put in?
A. I’ve always wanted something similar to STO, but in this game you begin at Star Fleet Academy and remain there using those uniforms until you find a guild. You take part in an assortment of missions but as a cadet. There would be no leveling at all, you would choose your skills then refine them.
Once you choose a guild, you would wear the appropriate uniform for your specified career. The style and era would fit the guilds theme, since depending on the ship they took (like say they had a Constitution Class) then the members would have the default outfits as a duty uniform, or if they had (a TNG era ship like the Galaxy) then they would all wear the uniform from that era, and even have the dress uniforms.
The ranks on the uniforms would be set as a default rank on your uniform according to your guild rank. Same with color according to your position/career. Space missions would be on the bridge and people would man different consoles, you could switch between bridge view or external view or have a split screen like in bridge commander.
Ground missions, you would assign a team like normal. These old also go for queued missions. Extra outfits for off duty and events could be acquired or bought from the game store. The entire interior of a starship though would be your main world, or star base depending on what you choose. Each deck each room. Risa and other worlds could be accessed too once unlocked as vacation time.
Q. How familiar are you with RPG’s and gamer culture in general?
A. I’ve played lots of them, and learned how quickly people show themselves in an unrestrained world. How they think and who they really are, are open in how they play the game. Not necessarily on who and what they choose, but how they dress them and role-play them, tell me everything about them i need to know. How they treat one another in the game also tells me of their own insecurities when they react emotionally, or show a need to dominate, even a self-centered display.
People in real life, tend to restrain themselves and hide their personalities, but in an MMO where they feel secure, they show their true selves. Very few I’ve met have an inner compassion, they are a rare treasure and shouldn’t be lost in this digital sea. I make a point to friend them and stay in touch. People are an open book online and I’ve met thousands of distinct personalities that have been more telling than seeing them face to face. I’m amazed just how easy people are to read once you get used to that code, it’s like staring at them through the Matrix with every response, pause and fake responses. When and what emoticon they use can tell me they are really thinking too, most often they are fake reactions to hide anger, envy or a lack of what to say.

All of the RPG’s out there are pay and grinds, with only the different backdrop in most situations. The more freedom a player has in the game, the better.
Q. What has been your best experience role-playing?
A. CatStar! He’s a gallant and shining Caitian, who in every situation is polished a tidy in presentation, yet retains the skills of Batman, Stark and Picard, while following the moral compass of Steve Rogers. I can really open up to my inner hero when I play as CatStar. I can be myself and not really have to play an alternate personality or worry about straying from his character. CatStar has many elements of myself within his personality. Teaming with his friend Alanna was always best as the RP with that Vulcans personality played out to make them inseparable like a dynamic duo. Each knew the other well enough to work off of the others skills, as if part of the same machine.
~Caitians are a feline species in the Star Trek Online MMORPG.
Q. What is one thing every game needs to be good?
A. Cats! :3
Q. Tell us more about these Cat’s you speak of 😛
A. That all depends on what cat you are talking about, you see I am a cat of many faces, Bruce Whiskers aka The Cat Crusader was born and raised in Pawtham City, and resides even still today at Whiskers Manor.
SuperCat aka Meow El, was originally born on the planet Kitton, but on his quest to catch the red dot became lost and found earth, so today he goes by the alias of Cat Kent and lives on a farm where an old couple looks after him while he secretly protects the earth should the red dot return.
But there is also James T Cat, but he moved away from his home planet and has been Captain of the USS Kittyprize for around (slap!) ..ok, you mean CatStar, He was resident of old Risa before the addition of the expansion on a little hut at the top of a hill, but since his disappearance has been secretly hold up at a private stronghold in Kaas city…the where a bouts exactly are top-secret as technically his status is KIA.
Q. What’s one thing every game needs to be bad?
A. ARC!
~ARC is the Perfect Word Entertainment multi-game launcher.
Q. What game have you most anticipated playing?
A. I actually have none that interest me of what’s upcoming, what I currently play is more than enough for me. I’m content with what I currently have going.
Q. What would you say is your highest gaming accomplishment?
A. Hmm.. In Star Trek Online I would say perfecting CatStar, but I think withdrawing from gaming as much lately would be a better accomplishment to brag about, since it takes you away from the real world….and when I’m gaming, that’s attention that could be focused better on hugging my cat or conversing with the Lord.
Q. Does gaming help you with personal relationships?
A. No, in fact the more enveloped into a game you get, the more socially damaging it can be to a person’s perceptions. If you’re sitting at the computer all day, you have your back to the people around you. That’s not very welcoming.
Q. What’s your best gaming story or anecdote?
A. Gaming story….”his name was CatStar, nuff said!” =^.^=
Q. If you could become one of your Characters (Any Game) who would it be and why?
A. I would say CatStar, but as cool as that toon is, his life was full of tragedy and heartbreaking situations. As tough of a little cat as he was, and as many countless he people he helped and saved, places explored, friends and allies made.. He always ended up alone. My Jedi in SWTOR would be better. He had a life dedicated to learning and helping people, cool powers that could heal the sick and injured.
Q. What’s your advice for new gamers?
A. The best advice I could give to new gamers would be to, play in moderation, don’t spend money unless you absolutely have to, and don’t get so involved in a game that you become angry. If it starts to make you angry unplug for a week or two then returns. Also don’t be afraid to ask for help or makes friends, but choose your friends wisely. Don’t follow trolls! Don’t forget to live a life outside of the game, no matter how addictive it becomes, and spend time with real people so you don’t become dependent on the game.
Q. What are your passions besides gaming?
A. I like learning new things, gardening, and spending time with my cat, I still like to play baseball! But my favorite thing to do most of all is spending time with the Lord! I guess in closing I’d like to make a shout out to good friends i’ve made over the years while gaming. People who made the game fun for me to have them along, as they are RL friends and family: Luna – Alanna – Plasma – Dante – Aries – Ashkrik – Otisnoble – Maxopkhn – Vash – Willa – Yackley – Phil
